RDC served as architect of record for the restoration and revitalization of the Historic South Coast Theatre, a 1930’s landmark on Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, Orange County that has become a Flagship Rivian Space. The theatre served as a beloved gathering space for the community for 80 years until it closed in 2015. Rivian saw the opportunity to restore and reimagine the Laguna space as a revived 1930s theater for the public, with community screenings and a place to get to know Rivian electric adventure vehicles, map trips to Mammoth and sit behind the wheel. RDC worked with Rivian to restore and re-enforce the historic beachside building, identifying and solving problems associated with the old building and the seaside location that included water damage and water issues. The effort preserved and restored the theatres iconic façade and marquee, and restored the unique interiors features. The tiled courtyard, distinctive vertical tower, star-shaped ceiling light fixture and murals in the style of the original artist keep the character of the place alive, and makes it a cultural hub for the community that ties the past to the future.
