Known as the “Jewel City,” Glendale is one of Los Angeles County’s most vibrant and culturally rich communities. To showcase Glendale’s dynamic urban fabric, RDC transformed a long-vacant 1970s Virgil’s Hardware building into a refined, community-centered retail destination, anchored by Erewhon’s signature market experience.

Addressing the challenges of adapting an aging, underutilized building, RDC collaborated closely with Erewhon’s design team and consultants to integrate contemporary systems and flexible interior layouts, including mezzanine spaces. Inside, warm wood banding wraps the perimeter soffit, complemented by dark blue tile at the service deli and tonic bar to highlight key experiential moments. A dark ceiling paired with polished concrete flooring grounds the space, creating a cohesive environment.

The design approach balances preservation and reinvention, retaining the existing structure while introducing a Californian contemporary expression. A mid-century modern exterior language emerges through vertical fins that articulate the façade, creating rhythm, depth, and subtle shifts of light throughout the day, while a clean, minimalist palette establishes a renewed presence along the street.
