Retail Design Collaborative, in partnership with Balboa Retail Partners, transformed vacant retail space at The Shoppes at Gateway in Springfield, Oregon, into a new Crunch Fitness Signature Club. The project repurposed interior-facing retail space within the mall's north concourse, creating a one-story, 45,000-square-foot fitness facility. The club represents Fitness Ventures' 49th Crunch location nationwide and its first in Oregon.
As part of a larger vision to revitalize and reposition the shopping center, RDC also led a series of strategic mall-wide improvements designed to enhance accessibility, visibility, and the overall guest experience. A former service and disposal area that obstructed a secondary mall entrance was relocated, allowing for the creation of a new, highly visible exterior entrance for Crunch Fitness and a significantly expanded public plaza. The redesigned outdoor environment features enhanced landscaping, new seating areas, improved pedestrian circulation, and increased accessibility, benefiting both fitness members and shoppers throughout the center.
The project exemplifies the adaptive reuse of underutilized retail space while supporting the ongoing evolution of The Shoppes at Gateway as a community-focused destination. The new Crunch Fitness location and its exterior design incorporate elements of the brand's national identity through a fresh architectural expression that complements the character of the center and its surrounding community.
