Life of an Intern at RDC

By: Mojdeh Hashemi

Starting my first internship was a bit intimidating, but it’s been an incredible journey of growth in the past month. Stepping into the world of architecture, specifically within the grocery market typology, has brought a whole new level of strategy, excitement, and to be honest, a newfound appreciation for well-designed grocery markets. I can confidently say this experience has been a real introduction to the professional world of architecture.

Coming in, I expected to observe, take notes, and assist where needed, but RDC has given me much more. As an intern, I’ve been assisting with mark-ups on drawings, which has given me a deeper understanding of how architectural designs are presented and refined to align with the city and the clients’ expectations. I’ve come to learn that it is not just about creating spaces but also about communicating ideas effectively. I have also been given the opportunity to attend a site visit, where I saw firsthand how concepts on paper translate into built environments.

What has stood out the most in my experience at RDC is the value placed on my input. Despite being an intern, I’ve never felt like just a spectator. My ideas are listened to, my questions are encouraged, and I’ve been given the space to contribute in meaningful ways. This level of engagement has made me feel like an integral part of the team, building my confidence and passion for architecture.

In addition to the invaluable education I’m gaining, the office and staff at RDC foster a supportive, loving, and open environment. It’s great to know that there are always people around to lend a hand when needed.

As I continue my internship, I’m excited to dive deeper into the projects and absorb as much as I can from the talented professionals around me. This month has already been a transformative experience, and I can’t wait to see how the next few months unfold.

For anyone considering an internship in architecture, my biggest takeaway is this: seek opportunities where you’re not just observing but actively contributing. The best learning experiences come when you’re challenged, engaged, and valued—and that is exactly what RDC has offered me.
