Gucci

Glendale, CA

RDC served as architect of record for Gucci’s store at the popular Americana at Brand shopping district. Architecture services included adapting the exterior of the existing high-profile space to the Gucci specifications and brand standards, working on deadline for opening date. Collaborating with client Caruso and the Gucci Italian headquarters, RDC created what is the sixth destination for Gucci shoppers in Southern California. The previous tenant had been a two-story restaurant, and RDC collaborated with Gucci and Caruso to adapt this to the retailer’s standards, expanding the ground floor space to meet Gucci’s requirements. Work was performed taking into account the structural needs of adapting the space at the ground floor and the consideration necessary for residents living above the space in luxury apartments.

Bay Theatre

Pacific Palisades, CA

Originally designed in 1948 by S. Charles Lee, the Bay Theater is a historical element in Pacific Palisades, an affluent neighborhood situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica mountains. Today, the theater is operated by Cinepolis, one of the largest luxury cinema brands around the world.

When designing the theater, RDC considered the coastal neighborhood and crafted an intimate collection of five screening rooms connected to a beach-resort themed community lounge. Each aspect of the guest experience was choreographed from arrival into a “coastal living room” to the concierge greeting, cocktail bar, and finally the reserved seating auditorium.

Throughout the building, a select palette of warm, weathered wood is accented with brass metal screens, with integrated lighting along feature walls to highlight the subtle neutral materials. The luxe theater features plush reclining seats, seat-side food and beverage services and state-of-the-art projection and sound. Cinepolis Pacific Palisades elevates the benchmark of customer experience, regional composition and creates a welcome destination for the community.

Erewhon

Pasadena, CA

The Pasadena community recently celebrated the transformation of 475 S. Lake Avenue, the historic I. Magnin & Company building. After a decade of vacancy, the iconic 45,000-square-foot multi-level former department store opened as a highly anticipated mixed-use destination.

Within Erewhon, a major interior detail can be found in the custom oxblood glazed soffit tiles that were handmade and imported from Portugal. The red hues throughout the store were selected to represent Pasadena as being home to the Rose Parade and distinguish it from the other Erewhon store design palettes, each of which is unique.

On the exterior, the terrazzo patio tiles recall the original terrazzo floors that were irreparable. This revitalization offered a special opportunity to blend the architecture of the original 1949 historic landmark with modern functionality, while considering ways to acknowledge the locational context.
